Several years ago I seriously considered buying a Vibe, since it seemed like such a good deal for what was effectively a Toyota .
125,000 mile manual Vibe for under 3 grand seems like a heck of a nice price. Very blah silver though.

The price ain’t bad, but sadly the answer is “maybe not.”
Both the 1.8L and 2.4L offered on the 2nd gen Vibe an ‘09+ Corolla and Matrix had some issues with excessive oil consumption. Far, far more prevalent on the 2.4, though.

I should have figured you’d give me the lowdown.

You're talking to a Jeep owner about oil consumption.

One of my more vain and ridiculous crusades is to get people to stop calling grey cars silver.

Like I told LongVoyerboi, when you buy a Corolla, it better be a Corolla. A leaky and glass-cannon offroader is tolerable because of what else the vehicle offers many things that a commuter-focused car cannot. When you pony up any amount of money for an alleged “appliance,” it’s held to a higher standard because it offers nothing but basic utility as this specific example is a BASE model to boot . And I say this as a used base-model Corolla owner.

Silver is just metallic grey. They’re all the same blah.
(I kid, sorry for triggering you.)
(Ok, I don’t kid, but still sorry.)
(Kinda sorry. I have those same problems; thankfully I can stop nagging co-workers about “EST” in another couple of days.)

We tried to buy a nice 2nd gen Fit, but those were still well beyond our budget back in 2015. I spent many nights researching small hatchbacks and settled on the ‘06-08 Matrix/Vibe. ‘08 was the last year of the 1ZZ-FE which no longer had issues with oil consumption.
I still cling to my theory that other that subpar piston rings, Toyota recommended excessively long oil change intervals on their economy cars (4-banger Camries and Corollas and their kin) which is no good when you’re not running full synthetic. They still give me the sass when I bring in my Tacoma ever 5-7 k miles when they recommend 10k. Fuck you and take my money, 10k is absurd, and the truck is used for work.

A new modern low mileage 4-cylinder manual Toyota hatchback for $3000 is definitely NP!
Yeah silver sucks, and there’s no sunroof, but Toyota makes the best cars, and with only 125k, it will last a long long time with no problems. The 1.8L 2ZR will get great gas mileage and the 5-speed makes it fun. Yeah, a fun economical reliable Toyota hatchback with lots of space and a rear wiper :o)
If you can deal with the lack of sunroof and the boring color, it is a great deal.
The only time there’d be something wrong with it is if it has a shady history, shitty previous owners
, etc. but that goes for any used car.

A dealer service department gives you sass for giving them *more* money? Don’t they usually like to upsell shit and make you come more frequently? I’m surprised a dealer would refuse customer-pay work!
Go to Jiffy Lube. They won’t give you the
sass :p
They’ll even let you come in every 3k

Is that the same 1.8 they put in the Corolla (and Prizm) since the early 90s? I had a ‘93 Prizm with the 1.8 and it went through about a quart of oil between oil changes. It had about 120k on the clock when I bought it in ‘99.

The 1ZZ goes back to the late 90s, and while I base this on nothing but Toyota’s known thriftiness, I’m sure the 1ZZ is very similar to your older 1.8 in construction.

Jiffy Lube spilled coolant all over my engine block and I smokescreened myself on the freeway as a result. That particular location finally went out of business earlier this year. The Goodyear nearby stripped my oil filter and I lost half my oil in one hour. The Grease Monkey tried to upsell my wife on services that weren’t even applicable to the vehicle.
Quick-lube joints can go to hell. The forced to go to dealerships, which I truly loathe. I am not permitted to work on the company-owned truck myself.

It frustrates me when they won’t take my money. 6 months or 5000 miles was in my car’s book, but they didn’t want it until 5000. 18 months later at like 3700, I finally switched dealers and they did it for me. I’m also making them change my wife’s at regular intervals (not putting up with that 10k silliness). It’s not like our cars warm up more than like once a week, but hers runs basically daily for less than a mile.

You could probably change it yourself, except of course documented maintenance and whatnot That and I have no idea how much a PITA a modern Toyota is to change oil on these days.

Not sure. I don’t do it anymore because I wasn’t allowed to for almost a decade due to living in a condo, so I have grown very accustomed to having it done .
Her car came with included maintenance from Toyota , so we might as well take advantage of it... Still, I’d get it done because I expect this car to last a while.

I’ll brook very little debate on the British spelling of this word as they understand the color skin deep.

I had a vibe Just like the one pictured, 1.8 5 speed, stripper model. I wasn’t that enthusiastic about it at the time, but I sure missed it when it was gone. It’s basically a corolla wagon.

If you take good care of your engine, they don’t get to charge you for the bigger repairs that come from neglecting it.

A friend of mine with one of these has had 2 engines in it that both have had oil consumption issues. Apparently it’s a common problem with this generation

I’m on the opposite end of things. Don’t call silver cars grey! And this car is definitely silver rather than grey.

No it’s not. Silver, polished or unpolished, has a much different shine to it that looks much more attractive than these grey cars.
